Okay, this will probably be the strangest article on Internet marketing that you have ever read in your life, but hang in there because there is a method to my madness. I am going to have you go through a little exercise that I call the toothpaste test. I want you to actually do this. After you have, I will explain to you why I had you do it and hopefully, you’ll learn a lesson from it. Okay, are we cool so far? Great! Keep reading and you’ll discover the wonder of the toothpaste test.

Here’s what I want you to do. You need to get two other members of your household together. Yes, you need three people to do this. You will also need two tubes of toothpaste and a stop watch. If you don’t have a stop watch, a regular watch with a second hand will do just fine. I recommend using those small tubes of toothpaste. You know, the kind that you take with you on trips. You don’t want to use those big family tubes. Finally, you’ll need two sheets of newspaper and two tables next to each other. Card tables or snack tables will work just fine.

Okay, take the newspapers and cover each table with them. Give one person one tube of toothpaste and another person the other tube of toothpaste. The third person, and that can be you, holds the stop watch. Okay, at the count of three, tell each person with the tube of toothpaste to open up the cap and empty the tube of toothpaste out onto the newspaper until the tubes are empty. Make sure you start the stop watch when you give them the go ahead. As soon as the first person empties out the tube, stop the watch and declare that person the winner.

But we’re not done. Okay, now I want you to have each person put the toothpaste that they emptied out onto the newspaper…back in the tube. That’s right…back in the tube.

Can’t do it can you.

Okay, why did I have you go through all this and what is the lesson we learned? Some things are very easy to get out but very hard to put back in. Internet marketing is like that. It’s easy to put out a campaign for or product or service and say anything we want…even if it’s not the truth. But when word gets around that the product we’re selling isn’t what we claimed it is, it’s very hard to take back that marketing. Oh sure, we can apologize and say we made a mistake. But that mistake is going to follow us and our reputation is going to suffer for it.

Honesty in marketing is critical. A lie, even a little one, can damage your reputation for life.

I hope this wasn’t too painful and messy a lesson for you to learn.

To YOUR Success,

Steven Wagenheim
