Okay, you have a great idea for an article and you know it will give your readers unique, useful and most importantly, profitable information. So you sit down at your computer and put your heart and soul into it. You write what you believe is a great article, submit it to your favorite article directories and check your stats every day. To your disappointment and surprise, you see that you are only getting a few readers clicking on your article and even worse, very few of those readers are actually clicking thru to your website. So now what?
First and foremost, you have to have a great title. This does not necessarily mean a catchy or flashy title though. The number one consideration in selecting a title is whether or not the search engines will find it and put you on the first three pages of their results. Without that, no one will see your article anyway, even if it does have the most clever title ever created.
I always start my title with the keyword or keywords that I’m targeting and then try and add some flash afterwards. The search engines generally look at the first three or four words of your title so you need to include your key word here.
Try going to the “most viewed articles” page of your favorite directory and get familiar with the way these authors have structured their titles. If the article has been read a large number of times, it most likely is not from the directories readers but rather has been found and listed high on a search engines results page and people are finding it there and then clicking through to the directory.
This is your first goal. Once the reader has found your article, you need to grab their interest with the first few sentences of the opening paragraph. Most search engines include these sentences in the results page beneath your title. You need to peak the reader’s interest and have him click thru to read your article.
Once the reader has read the first paragraph and decided to continue reading, you must “set the hook” and keep them reading all the way through. Your information must be of value but not long winded. You need to provide information that is not only interesting but that is something the reader can immediately use. You do not want to teach the reader everything about your topic, and in most cases that would be impossible to do anyway. But the point is, you need to offer valuable content and leave the reader wanting more and viewing you as the expert that can provide it.
You want to build up anticipation and want in the reader that leads them seamlessly from the article to your author’s bio box. You need to create a compelling call to action and in most cases, something about yourself that positions yourself as an expert on this particular topic.
I often choose to leave my personal bio out because I try to create the idea throughout my article that perhaps I’m someone who knows what I’m talking about and that you may want more information from. Most of the time I will simply try and wet the appetite and leave the reader with a path to more info and free goodies.
You must decide if your personal experience and expertise will move the reader to your site and if it will, by all means, include your accomplishments, unique abilities or expert credentials. If your accomplishments do not have a direct impact on the reader, leave them out and use the space to further educate and describe what they will find at your website when they click thru.
